Melanotan 1 (MT-1), also known by the generic name afamelanotide, is a synthetic 13-residue analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It differs from the native hormone by two substitutions, norleucine at position 4 and D-phenylalanine at position 7, giving the designation [Nle4, D-Phe7]-α-MSH. These changes increase both its stability and its potency at the melanocortin-1 receptor relative to the parent hormone. Its molecular weight is approximately 1,647 Da.
MT-1 was developed in the 1980s at the University of Arizona by the groups of Victor Hruby and Mac Hadley as part of a systematic programme of α-MSH analogue design. It is a linear peptide, in contrast to the cyclic Melanotan 2, and shows greater selectivity for MC1R. It is a standard tool compound in melanocortin receptor pharmacology and in melanocyte and keratinocyte cell-culture research, and it has been characterised extensively through clinical development. Megalab supplies MT-1 as a research reagent only.
Each vial contains 10mg of Melanotan 1 as a lyophilised powder. Purity is verified by HPLC at ≥99% on every batch. Lot information appears in the batch record on this page where published, and a Certificate of Analysis is available on request.
Store unopened vials at −20°C, protected from light; melanocortin analogues are light-sensitive and should be kept in amber or foil-wrapped containers once reconstituted. Bring to room temperature before opening. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water added slowly down the vial wall and swirl gently. Store at 2–8°C after reconstitution and use within 30 days.
Supplied for laboratory research use only.
MT-1 is a linear 13-residue analogue with relative selectivity for MC1R. MT-2 is a shorter cyclic heptapeptide that acts across several melanocortin receptor subtypes. Researchers select between them according to the receptor profile their protocol requires.
Yes. Afamelanotide is the generic name for the same [Nle4, D-Phe7]-α-MSH sequence. This product is supplied as a research-grade reagent.
Yes. Store lyophilised vials away from light, and keep reconstituted solution in an amber vial or wrapped in foil at 2–8°C.
