Research Overview

What PT-141 is

PT-141, generic name bremelanotide, is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide with the structure Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-OH. It is structurally almost identical to Melanotan 2, differing only in its C-terminus, where the amide of MT-2 is replaced by a free carboxylic acid. It was originally identified as a metabolite of MT-2 and subsequently developed as a compound in its own right. Its molecular weight is approximately 1,025 Da.

Research background

PT-141 is characterised in the literature as an agonist at the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) with additional activity at MC1R and MC3R. It has been used as a tool compound in studies of central melanocortin signalling in rodent models and in receptor pharmacology, and it has been characterised extensively through clinical development. Its close structural relationship to MT-2 makes the pair useful for investigating how a single C-terminal change alters receptor behaviour. Megalab supplies PT-141 for in-vitro research only.

Specification

Each vial contains 10mg of PT-141 as a lyophilised powder. Purity is verified by HPLC at ≥99% on every batch. The batch record on this page identifies the current lot where published, and a Certificate of Analysis is available on request.

Handling and storage

Store unopened vials at −20°C, protected from light, and keep reconstituted solution away from light. Allow to reach room temperature before opening. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water added slowly down the inside of the vial, swirling gently. Store at 2–8°C after reconstitution and use within 30 days.

Supplied for laboratory research use only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the structural difference between PT-141 and Melanotan 2?

Only the C-terminus. MT-2 ends in an amide; PT-141 ends in a carboxylic acid. The cyclic core is otherwise identical.

Is PT-141 the same as bremelanotide?

Yes. Bremelanotide is the generic name; PT-141 was the original development code and remains the name most used in research supply.

Which receptor is PT-141 associated with?

It is characterised primarily as an MC4R agonist, with lesser activity at MC1R and MC3R.
